Police Academy

Delivering high-quality training is paramount, and the DC Metropolitan Police Department is on the cutting edge. During the 28 weeks of academy training, recruits learn from the best instructors in law enforcement. From our 360 degree simulator to our indoor tactical training center for scenario-based learning, the MPD has it all.

  • Physical Training Program
  • Maintaining physical fitness is an important part of being a police officer. Prior to beginning any physical training program, it is recommended to be cleared for physical activity by your physician. All recruits are strongly encouraged to begin working out and conditioning themselves physically prior to starting academy training. In fact, it is recommended that all applicants begin working out in preparation as soon as they start the application process.

All applicants must also pass a physical agility test as part of the hiring process.

To help prepare for the academy, here are some goals to strive for:

    • At least 25 correct push-ups in one-minute
    • At least 30 correct sit-ups in one-minute
    • 1.5 mile run in fifteen minutes and fifty-four (15:54) seconds or less (walking during any portion is disqualification)
    • 300-meter sprint in sixty-six (:66) seconds or less (walking during any portion is disqualification)
  • Academy Schedule
  • Below is an example training schedule. Please note that when recruits are in specialized training, such as Civil Disturbance Unit training, Firearms Training, and Vehicle Skills Training, their entire day is dedicated to that specialized skill.
